Deadly fire at Alberta military base leaves casualties, injuries
What's new: Officials have not released a cause or toll, while medics near the base reported being overwhelmed by patients.
A serious incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta killed an unspecified number of people, injured others and set off a major fire Saturday, Canadian officials said. Defense Minister David McGuinty said the toll was still unclear and gave no cause for the blast or fire. Prime Minister Mark Carney said federal authorities were working with Alberta and local officials, while the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP and emergency crews responded at the scene. The municipal district of Wainwright said strong winds pushed the fire rapidly and that it spread beyond the base perimeter before being brought under control later Saturday. A doctor in Edmonton told CBC that the Wainwright health facility was overwhelmed by the number of patients.
