Dasco urges residents to sell dollars as rupiah hits 17,941

The rupiah touched a record low of 18,201 on June 8, while the government has promised stabilization steps this week.

Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad urged the public not to hoard U.S. dollars when the rupiah stood at 17,941 per dollar on Thursday morning, June 11, 2026. He said the government is preparing a strategy to stabilize the exchange rate starting this week and believes the rupiah can strengthen in the near term. Earlier, the rupiah fell to an all-time low of 18,201 per dollar on June 8. In a meeting with Commission XI of the House of Representatives, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said pressure on the rupiah was still driven by global sentiment, risk-off conditions in financial markets, and domestic travel and financial transactions. Even so, he said the current weakness could be overshooting because foreign exchange reserves, inflation and Bank Indonesia's response are seen as still supporting domestic fundamentals.
