Cuba restores only part of grid after islandwide blackout hits 10 million

What’s new: About one-third of Havana had power back Tuesday, but the island’s east and west remained offline.

Cuba was still struggling Tuesday to restore electricity after a nationwide grid collapse left nearly 10 million people without power, the third major blackout to hit the island this year. Grid operator UNE said central Cuba had been reconnected, stretching from the port of Mariel to Sancti Spiritus province, but the eastern and western ends of the country were still offline. In Havana, about one-third of the capital had electricity again, though service remained patchy. Authorities had not fully explained the cause of Monday’s collapse. The blackout halted much public transportation and added to pressure on Cuba’s already strained energy system, as officials and state media tied the crisis to fuel shortages and tighter US sanctions.
