Crowded race to replace Steny Hoyer leads Maryland primary ballot
Why it matters: The Democratic winner in Maryland's 5th District is likely headed to Congress from a safely blue seat.
Maryland voters headed to the polls Tuesday with an unusually crowded Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Steny Hoyer in the state's 5th Congressional District. Hoyer, 87, said earlier this year he would leave Congress after more than four decades, setting off a contest with more than 20 Democratic candidates in the deep-blue southern Maryland seat. Maryland state Del. Adrian Boafo entered the race with Hoyer's backing and endorsements from Gov. Wes Moore and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks. Other contenders include former Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, healthcare executive Quincy Bareebe, County Councilwoman Wala Blegay and former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn.
