Cristiano Ronaldo retires from Portugal after 234 caps, 146 goals
What's next: Portugal names its Nations League squad Friday, and the federation plans a formal tribute to its longtime captain.
Cristiano Ronaldo has ended his international career with Portugal, closing a 23-year run in which he set world records with 234 caps and 146 goals. The 41-year-old forward made his debut in 2003 and helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025. His exit follows a turbulent stretch with coach Jorge Jesus after Ronaldo was told he would not start a Nations League game against Denmark, then left camp and later received a 30-day suspension and a fine. In a farewell video, Ronaldo said it was time to pass on Portugal's No. 7 shirt. The Portuguese Football Federation said it wants to organize a tribute with fans and the country.
