Cristiano Ronaldo ends Portugal career after 234 games and 146 goals
What's next: Portugal names its Nations League squad Friday after Ronaldo's exit following a clash with coach Jorge Jesus.
Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international soccer, ending a 23-year Portugal career in which he scored 146 goals in 234 appearances. The 41-year-old captain said the decision was emotional and described representing Portugal as the greatest honor of his career. His departure follows a recent dispute with coach Jorge Jesus after Ronaldo was left on the bench, then left camp when told he would not start the next match. Portugal's federation later fined him and suspended him for 30 days, though the ban did not rule him out of any games. Ronaldo's final appearance came against Wales on Sept. 24. He won Euro 2016 and Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025 with Portugal.
