Cornyn predicted midterm 'disaster' for Trump after Texas primary loss

What's new: The former Texas senator said Trump's backing of Ken Paxton will make races costlier in Texas and harder nationwide.

Former Sen. John Cornyn predicted a November “disaster” for President Donald Trump after losing last month’s Texas Republican Senate runoff to Trump-backed Attorney General Ken Paxton. In remarks reported by The New York Times and cited by Fox News, Cornyn said Trump’s intervention would raise costs in Texas and make campaigns tougher around the country. Cornyn, who had served in the Senate since 2002, lost the May 26 runoff by a wide margin after Trump endorsed Paxton late in the race. Cornyn also said Trump demands total loyalty and argued the president could face a politically bruising final two years if Republicans fare poorly in the midterms.
