Cornell bars wild-game butchering in dorm kitchens after bear case

Cornell University updated its housing rules to prohibit students from processing wild or game animals in community kitchens after a 2025 incident involving a black bear carcass in a dorm. The school confirmed the change to a student newspaper and linked it directly to the episode in Ganędagǫ Hall, where two students prepared a bear they had killed. One student, Aaron Chin, later said on the MeatEater podcast that he and another Cornell student had planned to use a friend's house but brought the carcass to campus after those plans fell through. The incident drew backlash and a review by New York's Department of Environmental Conservation, which found no code violations after inspecting the kitchen.
