Colombia runoff set between De la Espriella and Cepeda
Colombia's presidential race is headed to a June 21 runoff after Abelardo de la Espriella led Iván Cepeda in the first round.
Colombia's presidential election will go to a June 21 runoff after no candidate won an outright majority in Sunday's first-round vote. With nearly all ballots counted, lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella led with about 43.7% of the vote, ahead of leftist Sen. Iván Cepeda at roughly 41%. Cepeda, an ally of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, has vowed to continue the government's "total peace" policy of negotiating with armed groups. De la Espriella, a businessman and admirer of President Donald Trump, has campaigned on a tougher military offensive against criminal groups and closer cooperation with the United States. The result sets up a stark choice for voters in a country grappling with renewed violence after years of armed conflict.
