Christa Pike returns to Tennessee prison after surviving execution

What's next: Her lawyers want Gov. Bill Lee to commute her death sentence as Tennessee reviews its execution procedures.

Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate who survived a Sept. 30 lethal injection attempt, has been discharged from a local hospital and returned to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, her attorneys said Saturday. Pike received two doses of pentobarbital during the execution attempt but did not die. She was hospitalized in critical condition and later regained consciousness. Her legal team says she is still receiving medical care in prison and they are monitoring her recovery. The case has intensified scrutiny of Tennessee's execution protocol after Pike's attorneys had warned that her veins and a blood condition could complicate the procedure.
