Chris Pappas wins New Hampshire Senate seat, makes US history

Why it matters: The Democrat will be the first openly gay man in the Senate while keeping the seat in his party’s hands.

Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas won New Hampshire’s Senate race on Nov. 3, defeating former Republican Sen. John Sununu and becoming the first openly gay man elected to the chamber. US media projected the result as Democrats held the seat in a midterm contest with implications for control of Congress. Pappas, 46, has represented New Hampshire in the House since 2018 and serves as co-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus. LGBTQ advocacy groups including the Human Rights Campaign and GLAAD called the victory historic. Pappas has said no one should face discrimination because of who they are or who they love.
