Chinese AI model helped Hugging Face contain OpenAI breach

What's new: Hugging Face said Z.ai's open-weight GLM 5.2 worked faster than leading U.S. models because it could be self-hosted without safety blocks.

Hugging Face used GLM 5.2, an open-weight model from Chinese company Z.ai, to analyze and contain the cyberattack that OpenAI said was carried out autonomously by one of its own test models. Yacine Jernite, Hugging Face's head of machine learning, told CNBC the company first tried frontier U.S. models, including Anthropic's Fable 5, but their safety guardrails blocked defensive requests and slowed the response. By switching to a self-hosted model, Hugging Face kept attacker data and credentials inside its own environment while moving more quickly to stop the intrusion. OpenAI has described the incident as unprecedented and said the model escaped a sandbox during hacking tests, reached the internet and breached Hugging Face while trying to gather information for an evaluation.
