China probes formaldehyde-treated cabbages as South Korea checks imports

Chinese authorities are investigating the illegal use of formaldehyde to preserve cabbages after footage from Hebei province showed workers dipping the vegetables in a solution before transport. Officials in Kangbao county said police had taken legal action and that markets nationwide were carrying out spot checks to trace any affected produce. The case has also triggered checks beyond China. South Korea tightened inspections of Chinese napa cabbage imports on Aug. 24 and said tests on eight batches found no formaldehyde. Taiwan said it had no direct imports of Chinese cabbage this year and later said no kimchi or related products linked to the case had entered from South Korea.
