Charging e-bike battery sparks Geylang condo fire, 5 evacuated
Why it matters: Singapore counted 34 active-mobility-device fires among 304 residential electrical fires in 2025.
A charging e-bike battery left unattended caught fire in a seventh-floor unit at Casa Aerata in Geylang on June 21, forcing the evacuation of five people from neighboring units, the Singapore Civil Defence Force said. No injuries were reported. SCDF said it was alerted at about 5:35 p.m. to 9 Lorong 26 Geylang and put out the blaze with a hosereel and a compressed air foam backpack. Preliminary findings showed the fire was of electrical origin and involved a power-assisted bicycle battery charging in the living room. Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC lawmaker Cai Yinzhou said the area below the unit was cleared before a window shattered from the heat. SCDF urged residents not to use non-original batteries or leave devices charging for long periods or overnight.
