Central Papua police chief urges Carstensz tourism development
The proposal would bring together the Central Papua provincial government, five nearby regencies, indigenous communities and private firms.
Central Papua Police Chief Jeremias Rontini has called on local governments, indigenous communities and private companies to work together to manage the Puncak Carstensz area as a tourism destination. He made the appeal after the raising of the Red and White Flag at an elevation of 4,884 meters above sea level in Carstensz, on Thursday, in Timika. According to Jeremias, the management of the area needs to involve the Central Papua provincial government as well as nearby regencies, namely Mimika, Intan Jaya, Puncak, Paniai and Deiyai. He said professional management could make Carstensz safer for visitors while also increasing local revenue. At the same time, he asked that cleanliness, environmental preservation and the habitat of native mountain plants be maintained.
