Carney visits ancestral Irish village ahead of G7 summit
What's next: Carney said reinforcing the ceasefire will be the top issue when G7 leaders meet in France on Monday.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spent Sunday in County Mayo, visiting the village of Aughagower where his grandparents were born before emigrating to Canada in 1925. Carney attended Mass, met more than 20 relatives, visited family graves and planted an Irish oak tree during the stop on his way to the G7 summit in France. In Dublin a day earlier, he urged closer Canada-Ireland and Europe ties as the post-Cold War order frays. Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said Dublin would work to deepen European Union-Canada relations as Ireland prepares to take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1.
