Carney leaves G7 without Trump sit-down as trade pact nears July 1

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is leaving the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains without a formal bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump, even as talks over the North American free-trade pact reach a critical stage. Carney said the lack of a sit-down was not a snub, noting he had seven or eight discussions with Trump over 36 hours and expected more. The trade agreement covering Canada, the United States and Mexico comes up for renewal on July 1, and Trump said last week he may not extend it. Canadian trade minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette met U.S. Trade Ambassador Jamieson Greer at the summit, and LeBlanc said they made progress.
