Cargo ship carrying 2,500 containers sinks after mine hit in Hormuz
Iranian authorities warned some containers remain adrift amid reports of another strike on a vessel in the vital energy route.
A cargo ship carrying more than 2,500 containers caught fire and sank in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the blast occurred as the ship passed through a route it described as unauthorized and dangerous, then the fire spread until the vessel went under on Wednesday morning. The IRGC Navy later urged local ships and fishermen to stay alert because some containers were still floating near the site. Other reports added to the uncertainty: maritime security firm Vanguard said the Singapore-flagged GFS Pride was hit by a projectile and sank, while UKMTO reported two other container ships were struck by projectiles but continued their voyages with minor damage.
