Capital One seeks dismissal in Trump account-closure lawsuit

What's new: The bank tied more than 300 Trump-linked account closures to a monthslong anti-money-laundering review, not Jan. 6 politics.

Capital One asked a federal judge in Florida to throw out the Trump Organization's lawsuit over the 2021 closure of hundreds of its bank accounts, arguing the decision followed a monthslong anti-money-laundering review. In court papers filed July 31, the bank said its financial-crimes team closed the accounts for AML reasons after analyzing transaction patterns under bank policy and regulatory guidance. The Trump Organization and Eric Trump have claimed the move was political retaliation after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Capital One said it never accused the business of illegal money laundering. The dispute covers roughly 385 accounts, and the Miami federal court has already dismissed two earlier versions of the complaint while allowing amended filings.
