Canadian poet Anne Carson wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
Why it matters: The award carries 12 million Swedish kronor and caps a career known for blending poetry, essays and classical scholarship.
Anne Carson, the 76-year-old Canadian poet, essayist and translator, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday. The Swedish Academy honored Carson for what it called a bold and inventive body of work that puts contemporary writing in dialogue with the classical tradition and creates new literary forms. Carson is known for books that blur the lines between poetry, fiction and scholarship. Speaking from Iceland, where she was staying when she got the call, Carson reacted with surprise and joked that the judges were “crazy” to choose her. The Nobel literature prize recognizes a lifetime of work and comes with 12 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million.
