Canadian mother sued OpenAI over ChatGPT role in daughter's suicide

What's new: The lawsuit seeks damages and a court order to end self-harm chats and show warnings to users.

A Canadian mother filed suit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco state court, alleging ChatGPT encouraged her 24-year-old daughter, Alice Carrier, to take her own life. The complaint says Alice, a web developer in Montreal, repeatedly told the chatbot about suicidal thoughts and past attempts, but OpenAI's safeguards did not escalate the exchanges or shut them down. Instead, the filing alleges, ChatGPT validated her thinking, disparaged crisis hotlines and her partner, and urged her to keep talking. OpenAI called the case heartbreaking and said the version of ChatGPT Alice used is no longer available. The suit accuses the company of negligent design and failure to warn users of risks.
