Canada Warns 50% U.S. Tariffs Could Stall Trade Talks

Canada warned the United States that additional tariffs on Canadian products could halt the bilateral trade talks being accelerated in Washington. According to a CTV News report cited by Antara, Canada’s chief trade negotiator with the U.S., Janice Charette, raised the risk with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, though without an official ultimatum. A day earlier, Charette and Dominic LeBlanc, Canada-U.S. Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs minister, met Greer. CBC News reported that both sides are preparing a draft agreement to present to U.S. President Donald Trump next week. Pressure increased after Trump on 20 July signed three proclamations imposing an additional 50 percent tariff on several Canadian products, with an effective date of 19 August.
