Canada blanks Qatar 6-0 for first World Cup win

Jonathan David scored a hat trick, Qatar finished with nine men, and Ismaël Koné's serious injury cast a shadow over Vancouver.

Canada crushed Qatar 6-0 in a Group B match at the 2026 World Cup at BC Place in Vancouver on Thursday, while recording its first victory in the men's World Cup. Jonathan David led the way with a hat trick, while Cyle Larin, an Al-Mannai own goal and a goal from Saliba completed the rout. Canada was already up 3-0 at halftime through Larin in the 16th minute and two goals from David in the 29th and 45+3. Qatar then lost Homam Ahmed, who was shown a straight red card in the 33rd minute after a foul on Tajon Buchanan. In the second half, Assim Madibo was also sent off in the 54th minute. The numerical advantage helped Canada add three more goals. The big win was marred by a serious injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné in the second half. Coach Jesse Marsch described Koné's absence as a major loss, though he said the player would receive medical treatment soon.
