Canada, Mexico seek 16-year USMCA renewal before July review

What's next: Washington can renew the pact, push annual reviews, or begin a renegotiation as tariff disputes cloud the talks.

Canada and Mexico have formally urged the United States to extend the USMCA free trade pact for another 16 years ahead of a July review that could reopen the deal. Canada-U.S. trade minister Dominic LeBlanc sent the request to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Mexico's Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard before talks in Washington. Prime Minister Mark Carney has also pressed for relief from U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber. The agreement has shielded many North American goods from broader Trump trade measures, but Washington has signaled it may seek tougher rules, including higher U.S. content in vehicles and broader market access in Canada.
