California deputies used magnet drone to disarm parole suspect
What's new: Sacramento County deputies said the man was later jailed without bail after being hospitalized for suspected drug use.
Sacramento County sheriff's deputies used a drone fitted with a magnet to pull a knife from a barricaded parole violator's hand inside a garage, then arrested him without gunfire, authorities said. The sheriff's office identified the suspect as 30-year-old Austin Carter, a registered sex offender with a criminal record who was wanted for violating parole. Deputies said negotiators got no response after SWAT arrived at his home and that Carter had earlier been seen with a firearm. After the drone removed the knife, officers used a robotic K9 platform called Buster to clear obstacles before taking Carter into custody. He was treated by paramedics, taken to a hospital and then booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
