Buka Luwur Sunan Kudus Distributes 34,000 Rice Packs
This year’s observance used 22 water buffaloes, 92 goats and donated rice to mark the peak of the 10 Muharam tradition in Kudus.
The Buka Luwur Sunan Kudus tradition was held again at the Menara and Tomb complex of Sunan Kudus in Kudus Regency, Central Java, with more than 34,000 packs of rice handed out to the public on Thursday (25/6), coinciding with 10 Muharam 1448 Hijriah. Buka Luwur Sunan Kudus committee spokesman Denny Nur Hakim said the number of rice packs distributed changes every year, depending on livestock and rice donated by residents. This year, the committee received 22 water buffaloes and 92 goats. The animals were processed on 9 Muharam into two signature dishes, uyah asem and jangkrik. The rice packs contained uyah asem so they would last longer as they were distributed from early morning to various areas in Kudus. The tradition marks the replacement of the luwur, or canopy, at the tomb of Sunan Kudus.
