Bronx man faces hate-crime charges after attack at NYC synagogue

A Bronx man was charged with assault and criminal mischief as hate crimes after police said he disrupted Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Manhattan on Friday. The NYPD identified the suspect as 46-year-old Larry Montes and said he faces two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of criminal mischief as a hate crime, among other charges. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said synagogue security was escorting Montes out when he struck a congregant, damaged synagogue property, then spat at and headbutted a member of the security team. An NYPD sergeant working a paid detail at the synagogue took him into custody. Police said no one was seriously injured and the investigation is continuing.
