Brazil orders Discord to halt livestreams after teen suicide case

What's next: The platform has three days to comply as authorities press for age checks and stronger child-safety controls.

Brazil’s data protection agency ordered Discord to suspend livestreams after investigators said a 13-year-old girl was pushed during a July broadcast to self-harm and take her own life. Authorities said five teenagers were arrested in the case, and police also intervened to save another girl who was about to attempt suicide live online. The ANPD said there was strong evidence Discord had not taken reasonable steps to protect children and adolescents. The US-based platform said it had removed the private group tied to the case before the girl’s death and was cooperating with law enforcement while reviewing the order. Brazil earlier this year tightened rules requiring age verification and parental linkage for users under 16.
