BPS accelerates 2026 Economic Census, business data 86% complete

Data collection runs from May-August 2026 and will update the MSME map and economic structure, both seen as changed sharply since 2016.

The Badan Pusat Statistik is speeding up the 2026 Economic Census to update the picture of the national economy’s structure, which it says has changed significantly over the past decade. BPS Deputy for Balance Sheets and Statistical Analysis M. Edy Mahmud said the census is held every 10 years; the last data collection took place in 2016. The survey runs from May to August 2026, and as of Aug. 7, the work had reached about 86 percent of the estimated business population. BPS said changes in production, marketing, distribution and digital transactions have created many new business models, including home-based UMKM selling through marketplaces. Census results will be published as aggregate data, while individual data are protected under the Undang-Undang Statistik.
