Book says Trump threatened a 'divorce' from Israel
The September 2025 call came as Trump pushed a 20-point Gaza ceasefire and reconstruction plan.
A new book says U.S. President Donald Trump once threatened a “divorce” with Israel while pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept Washington’s draft Gaza ceasefire deal. In Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump by Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, the tense exchange took place in September 2025 on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. Trump was speaking with Netanyahu on a call also joined by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to the book, Trump said everyone was fed up with Netanyahu and warned Israel could not walk back from the U.S.-proposed agreement draft. The book also says Trump was pushing a 20-point peace plan to end the war in Gaza and rebuild the territory.
