Boehly, Walter weigh Chelsea stake sale in deal valuing club above £5bn

What's next: A sale to Clearlake could lift its Chelsea holding above 86% and hand it effective control of stadium plans.

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are exploring a sale of their Chelsea shares to majority owner Clearlake Capital in talks that would value the Premier League club at more than £5 billion. Clearlake already holds more than 60% of Chelsea, while Boehly, Walter and Hansjörg Wyss each own about 13% through Blueco 22 Holdings. A deal involving Boehly and Walter would push Clearlake's stake above 86%, giving Behdad Eghbali's firm effective control at Stamford Bridge. The ownership groups have been at odds for nearly two years, with stadium redevelopment emerging as a key point of tension. Boehly, Chelsea's chairman, is also due to be replaced at season's end by a Clearlake-appointed representative under the 2022 takeover terms.
