BNPB orders coastal evacuations in 5 provinces after M7.7 quake

BMKG measured tsunami waves of 9-75 centimeters through 08.20 WIB, with arrivals projected in Kaltara until 08.14 WIB.

BNPB urged coastal residents in Sulawesi Utara, Sulawesi Tengah, Maluku Utara, Gorontalo, Kalimantan Timur, and Kalimantan Utara to move away from beaches and follow evacuation orders after a magnitude 7,7 earthquake off the coast of Philippines triggered a tsunami warning. Areas under siaga status were told to evacuate people to higher ground, while wilayah under waspada were told to suspend activities on the water and stay away from riverbanks and shorelines. Based on BMKG modeling, waves were expected to arrive from 06.51 WIB in Kepulauan Sangihe to 08.14 WIB in Nunukan. By 08.20 WIB, BMKG recorded tsunami heights of 9-75 centimeters at several points, including Desa Tanjung Sidupa in Bolaang Mongondow Utara and Desa Talengen in Kepulauan Sangihe. BNPB said conditions on the ground remained under control as coordination continued with BPBD, TNI, Polri, Basarnas, and volunteers.
