Binance hack hits $6.3 billion, with North Korea links cited
What's new: Binance froze about $3 billion, halted withdrawals and said it expects to resume them within days while covering user losses.
Binance was hit by a $6.3 billion theft, a breach blockchain intelligence firms called the largest crypto hack on record. The exchange suspended withdrawals Friday, said deposits were unaffected and pledged to cover all user losses. Binance also said roughly $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen across blockchain networks, with withdrawals expected to resume by Sunday or within the next couple of days. TRM Labs said the attack likely came from TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking unit, and Chainalysis separately pointed to the same group. Bitcoin briefly fell below $77,000 after the news before trimming losses. The theft surpasses the roughly $1.5 billion stolen from Bybit in 2025.
