Binance hack hit $6.3 billion as issuers froze about $3 billion

What's next: Returning frozen USDT and USDC could take months or years and will require court orders and coordination with exchanges.

Binance said a security breach affected about $6.3 billion in client assets, with roughly $3 billion frozen on-chain after Circle, Tether and others blocked funds tied to the theft. The exchange temporarily halted withdrawals, said deposits were operating normally and pledged to cover customer losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users. Blockchain investigators at TRM Labs and Chainalysis linked the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor group, though the FBI said only that it was working with public and private partners to assess the incident. Binance said it had revoked affected address authorizations and expected to resume withdrawals within 48 hours while it upgrades security controls.
