Bezos-backed group buys 38% of Liverpool in deal worth over £2bn
What's next: The consortium has a 12-month option to buy control if Fenway Sports Group chooses to sell more of the club.
A consortium led by Amit Bhatia and backed by Jeff Bezos has bought a 38% stake in Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group, a deal that values the Premier League club at about £5 billion to £6 billion. The buyer, 1892 Holdings, paid just over £2 billion for the minority stake, according to reports cited by British media. FSG said it entered a definitive agreement for a strategic minority investment and will stay in operational control of Liverpool. The deal also gives 1892 Holdings first refusal to buy a controlling stake within the next 12 months if FSG decides to sell or cut its holding. Bhatia is set to become vice chairman and join an expanded board, pending regulatory approval.
