Belfast anti-immigrant riots torch homes after stabbing charge
What's new: Police charged a 30-year-old Sudanese man with attempted murder as leaders warned against targeting migrants.
Anti-immigrant riots spread across Belfast late June 9 after police charged a 30-year-old Sudanese man over a street stabbing that left a man in his 40s with serious injuries. Masked crowds burned vehicles, torched a bus and attacked homes, with BBC footage showing police helping a family escape a burning house. The suspect faces charges of attempted murder, carrying a knife in public and threats to kill, and is due in Belfast Magistrates’ Court on June 10. Police said the attack in north Belfast is not being treated as terrorism and that they are not seeking other suspects. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said the man had a five-year visa granted in September 2023 after traveling from Sudan through Paris and Dublin.
