Bahlil promises no blackouts as PLN faces 20 million-ton coal gap

The government formed a procurement team after PLN secured only 134 million tons against 154 million tons in annual demand.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said there is no plan for power outages in the near term after a meeting with Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto in Jakarta on Thursday (18/6/2026). At the same time, he acknowledged that coal supplies for PLN are not yet fully secure. PLN needs 154 million metric tons a year, while contracts secured so far total only 134 million tons, leaving a shortfall of about 20 million tons. To close the gap, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry formed a procurement team for medium-calorie coal involving PLN, Ditjen Minerba and BPKP. According to Bahlil, the main obstacle is the DMO price of 70 U.S. dollars per ton, far below the Harga Batu Bara Acuan for the first period of June 2026 of 121.83 U.S. dollars per ton.
