Asian confederation joins 136-vote bloc against FIFA sale plan

What's new: With Asia backing UEFA and CONCACAF, Gianni Infantino's plan now appears short of the 106 votes needed to pass.

The Asian Football Confederation joined UEFA and CONCACAF on Friday in opposing FIFA's plan to create a commercial subsidiary and sell minority stakes in its competitions to private investors. If member associations follow their confederations, 136 of FIFA's 211 members would line up against the proposal, well above the 106 votes needed to block it. The plan would place the World Cup and other events under a new entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise, with an estimated $20 billion structure. The AFC said the proposal lacked proper consultation and exposed weaknesses in FIFA's governance, while adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned, calling it a bad deal for football. FIFA insisted the consultation would continue.
