US uncovers 610-meter drug tunnel from Tijuana to San Diego
The passage had electricity, ventilation, reinforced walls and rails; four people were charged after a US$45 million cocaine seizure.
US authorities dismantled a drug-smuggling tunnel about 610 meters long that linked Tijuana, Mexico, with the Otay Mesa area of San Diego, California. A months-long investigation led to a warehouse disguised as a discount store in San Diego, where the tunnel exit was hidden. According to federal prosecutors in the Southern District of California, the underground passage was already equipped with electricity, ventilation, reinforced walls and a rail system to move cargo. In a related operation, officers seized more than one ton of cocaine valued at about US$45 million. Four men were arrested and charged with drug trafficking; if convicted, they could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
