Army picks 5 firms for nuclear microreactors at US bases

The U.S. Army selected five companies to build, own and operate nuclear microreactors at bases in North Carolina, Georgia, New York, Kentucky and Texas, part of a $2.2 billion push to harden military energy supplies against grid outages. The Janus program is expected to lead to more than 20 microreactors over five years.
The chosen suppliers are Antares Nuclear for Fort Bragg, Radiant Industries for Fort Benning, Westinghouse Electric for Fort Drum, BWX Technologies for Fort Campbell and General Atomics for Fort Hood. Army officials said the reactors are meant to provide reliable baseload power for critical infrastructure and can run for years without refueling. At least one unit is targeted to begin operating by Sept. 30, 2028, though officials acknowledged some designs remain untested and could miss milestones.
