Arizona Democrats seize House and Senate, completing 1st trifecta since 1966
Why it matters: Gov. Katie Hobbs can now pursue plans on water, affordability and school vouchers without a Republican-run Legislature.
Arizona Democrats won control of both chambers of the state Legislature and kept the governor’s office, giving the party its first governing trifecta in the state since 1966. The Associated Press determined Friday that enough legislative races had flipped for Democrats to take the state House and Senate after decades of Republican control. Republicans had held the House for 60 years and the Senate since the early 1990s. The result strengthens Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who in her first term vetoed more than 540 bills from the GOP-led Legislature on issues including taxes, immigration and voting laws. Arizona was part of a broader Democratic surge in state governments and in Congress.
