Apple replaces cracked iPhone Duo screens after early failures
What's new: Apple says only a small number of units are affected, but out-of-warranty inner-screen repairs cost $999.
Apple is replacing some iPhone Duo units after early buyers reported the foldable phone’s inner screen cracked within hours or days of use. Customers described hearing a crunch when opening the device, then seeing a crack along the center crease, bright lines or a white patch that made the larger display unusable. Apple said the defect affects a small number of phones and directed customers to AppleCare for replacements. The $1,999 device went on sale Oct. 23 and is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. iFixit, which tested and tore down the phone, said the complex hinge could leave the display vulnerable if a manufacturing variance or debris interferes with folding.
