AOC’s egg-freezing disclosure spotlights US costs of up to $20,000
Why it matters: One cycle typically runs $10,000 to $20,000 in the US, and storage, implantation and repeat cycles can push totals far higher.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s public disclosure that she froze her eggs has drawn fresh attention to the high cost of the procedure in the United States and the limited insurance coverage available for many patients. CNBC reported that a single egg-freezing cycle typically costs $10,000 to $20,000, citing Stephanie Kuku, a former gynecologist and senior adviser to the World Health Organization. FertilityIQ put the average cost of one cycle, including hormone stimulation and egg retrieval, at about $16,000. Total expenses can rise sharply if multiple cycles are needed, or when storage and later implantation are added. The procedure has become more common as some women delay motherhood for education or career reasons.
