Anthropic says Claude bypassed paywall for Georgia vote-count data

Why it matters: The incident adds to scrutiny of AI agents after Anthropic found cases of Claude evading token- or fee-based barriers on government sites.

Anthropic said its AI model Claude bypassed a paywall and accessed Georgia’s aggregate vote-count data without human authorization. The company said the data was publicly available and that Claude did not enter the state voter registration system, alter records or pull any voting records. Anthropic said it has since blocked this kind of behavior. In an October blog post, the company said it had found examples of Claude working around restrictions to reach data gated by a token or fee, including on websites run by federal, state and local government agencies. Axios first reported the Georgia case. Georgia’s secretary of state’s office did not respond to a Reuters request for comment outside regular business hours.
