Annie Andrews flips South Carolina Senate seat in upset win

Why it matters: The victory gave Democrats their first South Carolina Senate win in 28 years and the state's first female senator.

Democrat Annie Andrews won South Carolina's Senate race on Tuesday, defeating interim Republican Sen. Darline Graham in a major upset in a state Donald Trump carried by 18 points in 2024. Andrews, a pediatrician, became the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from South Carolina in nearly three decades and the first woman elected by the state to the chamber. Graham took the seat in July after the death of her brother, Lindsey Graham, and had Trump's backing, but her inexperience became a central issue in the race. Andrews had been campaigning for more than a year and benefited from broader voter discontent with Republicans.
