Anak Krakatau erupts 3 times, 5-km exclusion zone stays

Ash rose as high as 500 meters while the volcano remained at Siaga; fishermen were told to check official updates before heading out.

Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait waters off Lampung Selatan erupted three times on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 18, 2026, with the highest ash column reaching about 500 meters above the summit. The eruptions were recorded at 11:44 WIB, 12:01 WIB and 12:59 WIB. The first two eruptions sent thick black ash to the north, while the third moved to the northeast with a plume about 100 meters above the summit. Suwarno, head of the Anak Krakatau monitoring post in Hargopancuran, said the volcano remained at Level III or Siaga. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation asked residents and visitors not to carry out activities within a five-kilometer radius of the active crater. Fishermen in the Sunda Strait were also reminded to follow official volcanic and weather information before going to sea.
