Anak Krakatau erupts 8 times in a day, with glowing lava

PVMBG kept the 3-kilometer exclusion zone in place as Anak Krakatau remained at Level III, or Siaga.

Anak Krakatau in Lampung Selatan, Lampung, was recorded erupting eight times during the observation period on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 00:00-24:00 WIB. The eruptions were accompanied by glowing lava as the volcano remained at Level III, or Siaga. Muhammad Dika Nurzaman, an official at the Anak Krakatau volcano observation post from PVMBG, reported eruption heights of 200-300 meters above the crater summit, with gray to black ash. Visually, crater smoke was also observed from white to black, ranging from thin to thick, rising 10-300 meters. PVMBG instruments recorded eight eruption earthquakes, 46 gust earthquakes, 10 harmonic tremors, 11 hybrid or multi-phase earthquakes, and microtremors with a dominant amplitude of 20 mm.
