Amy Acton wins Ohio governor’s race, becoming state’s first woman elected
Why it matters: The Democrat will take office in January facing a GOP-controlled legislature likely to constrain her agenda.
Democrat Amy Acton won Ohio’s governor race, defeating Republican Vivek Ramaswamy and becoming the first woman elected governor of the state. The Associated Press called the race Tuesday. Acton, 60, is a physician and former Ohio health director who became widely known during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic under Gov. Mike DeWine. Her victory also gives Democrats their first Ohio governorship in two decades. The contest drew national attention after Ramaswamy’s campaign aired an attack ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother, prompting criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, including DeWine. Acton is set to take office in January.
