Amran inspects Karawang rice fields, pump irrigation eyed to lift IP to 3

About 3.000 hectares could be optimized, with rice yields targeted to rise from 7 tons to 11-12 tons per hectare.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman inspected rice fields in Karawang regency, West Java, Monday (31/8/2026), to check pump irrigation during the dry season. In the field, he found that water sources around the rice fields were still available, but some land had not been optimally irrigated, leaving planting potential underused. Amran asked that available water be immediately channeled so farmers can continue planting. The government aims to raise the planting index in the area from two to three crops a year. The land that can be optimized is said to reach about 3.000 hectares. Amran also said current productivity of about 7 tons per hectare could be increased to 11-12 tons with better cultivation methods. He said the latest report showed about 30.000 hectares of rice fields affected by drought out of a total of about 11 million hectares of rice crops.
