Ali Khamenei funeral procession moves from Iran to Iraq
The cortege is due to stop in Najaf and Karbala on July 8 before burial in Mashhad the next day.
The funeral procession for Ali Khamenei has moved from Iran to Iraq as part of a seven-day ceremony that began July 3. After lying in state in Tehran and then being taken to Qom, the cortege is scheduled to arrive in Najaf on July 8 and continue to Karbala before burial on July 9 in Mashhad, his hometown. CNN Indonesia reported that millions of mourners have packed Tehran since the weekend to pay their final respects. Najaf and Karbala were chosen because they are important holy cities for Shia Muslims. Najaf is home to the tomb of Imam Ali, while Karbala is known as the site of Imam Hussein's death in the Battle of Karbala, a key event in Shia tradition.
